The legend of Alderley Edge involves the Wizard Merlin who offers gold and treasure in exchange for a local farmer’s horse . Under The Edge sleeps King Arthur and his knights who will wake from their slumbers at the hour of our country’s need.
Merlin told the farmer who was on his way to Macclesfield market to sell him his white horse because it was needed by one of the knights who didn’t have a steed. The wizard tapped on a rock which opened revealing a large cave and the sleeping army and in return for the horse the farmer took gold in payment . When he stepped out of the cave with his riches he looked around to find Merlin and the cave had vanished.
Reputedly near to this spot is the Wizards Well on which are inscribed these words ’Drink of this and take thy fill - for this water falls by the wizard’s will.’ It never runs dry!
